WOOD AS A WAY OF BEING
The new forestry station in the centre of Nova Ponente/Deutschnofen is a highly functional administrative building designed to combine purpose and surroundings. Home to the local forestry office of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano/Bozen, the building represents a responsible use of resources and is constructed from a material inextricably linked to the daily work of its users: wood. The architecture reinterprets the traditional two-storey residential houses of the area with pitched roofs, reducing their form to the essentials, thus creating a conscious contrast while remaining in dialogue with the existing context.

FUNCTION AS THE BASIS OF DESIGN
The forestry station has a dual function: on one hand, it is the headquarters of the internal administration, and on the other, it is a point of reference for the public in matters related to the management of forest areas for economic use. The dual purpose of the building is reflected in its spatial organisation. The basement, made of reinforced concrete, houses a garage for service vehicles, changing rooms as well as storage and technical rooms. On the publicly accessible ground floor: the entrance, public service area and administrative offices, as well as an archive and an accessible toilet, ensuring usability in accordance with current regulations.
In the attic of the upper floor, under the gabled roof, there is a large meeting room with its own kitchenette. Thanks to pull-out beds, this space can also be used as an operations centre in emergency situations.

TIMBER AS STRUCTURE AND LANGUAGE
The choice of timber construction is consistent with the context and function of the building. Nova Ponente/Deutschnofen is one of the most densely wooded municipalities in South Tyrol: wood is omnipresent in the landscape and forms the basis of local forestry work. The load-bearing structure, walls and floors are made of a cross-laminated timber (X-lam). As such, wood is understood as a structural, spatial and identity-defining element, capable of defining both the atmosphere of the rooms and the character of the building.
Particular attention was paid to the design of the façades. The blackened wooden cladding is inspired by traditional preservation techniques, in which wood is heat-treated to increase durability. These practices can be found both in Japan, where wooden surfaces are intentionally charred, and in the local Alpine tradition, where poles fixed in the ground were treated with fire where they came into contact with the soil to protect them from moisture and rot. Inspired by this craftsmanship, the new forestry station takes shape as a form seemingly driven into the ground whilst reinterpreting traditional building knowledge as contemporary language.

SUSTAINABILITY AS A BUILDING RESOURCE
In addition to its wooden construction, the building has been built to high energy standards, achieving the CasaClima Gold standard. Energy is supplied by heat pumps powered by a roof-mounted photovoltaic system. All building components and technological systems are designed according to the state of the art, with particular attention to energy efficiency, durability and the reduction of consumption.

ARCHITECTURE AS A CONTRIBUTION
The building consciously elevates simplicity and form, favouring a rigorous use of material and construction detail. It is precisely in this sobriety that its quality lies: the architecture is a functional tool and, yet at the same time, as a concrete contribution to the contemporary debate on sustainability, responsibility and conscious construction.

STAZIONE FORESTALE NOVA PONENTE

IL LEGNO COME ATTEGGIAMENTO

Con la nuova stazione forestale nel centro di Nova Ponente nasce un edificio amministrativo concepito a partire dalla propria funzione. Sede dell’ufficio forestale locale della Provincia Autonoma di Bolzano, l’edificio rappresenta un uso responsabile delle risorse ed è realizzato nel materiale indissolubilmente legato al lavoro quotidiano dei suoi utenti: il legno. L’architettura rilegge le case residenziali tradizionali del luogo a due piani con tetto a falde, riducendone la forma all’essenziale, creando così un contrasto consapevole pur rimanendo in dialogo con il contesto esistente.

LA FUNZIONE COME BASE DEL PROGETTO
La stazione forestale svolge una duplice funzione: da un lato sede dell’amministrazione interna, dall’altro punto di riferimento per il pubblico nelle questioni legate alla gestione delle superfici forestali a uso economico. La doppia vocazione dell’edificio si riflette nella sua organizzazione spaziale. Il piano interrato, realizzato in calcestruzzo armato, ospita il garage per i mezzi di servizio, gli spogliatoi, i locali di deposito e i vani tecnici. Il piano terra costituisce il livello accessibile al pubblico e accoglie l’ingresso, l’area sportello e gli uffici amministrativi, oltre a un archivio e a un servizio igienico accessibile, garantendo la fruibilità secondo le normative vigenti. Al piano superiore, ricavato nella mansarda sotto il tetto a due falde, si trova una sala riunioni di ampie dimensioni con angolo cottura. Grazie alla presenza di posti letto estraibili, questo spazio può essere utilizzato anche come centro operativo in situazioni di emergenza.

IL LEGNO COME STRUTTURA ED ESPRESSIONE
La scelta di una costruzione in legno risulta coerente con il contesto e con la funzione dell’edificio. Nova Ponente è uno dei comuni più ricchi di superfici boscate dell’Alto Adige: il legno è onnipresente nel paesaggio e costituisce la base dell’attività forestale. La struttura portante, le pareti e i solai sono realizzati in legno lamellare a strati incrociati (X-lam). Il legno viene così inteso come elemento strutturale, spaziale e identitario, capace di definire sia l’atmosfera degli ambienti sia il carattere dell’edificio.
Particolare attenzione è stata dedicata alla progettazione delle facciate. Il rivestimento ligneo, con finitura nera, si ispira a tecniche tradizionali di protezione del materiale, nelle quali il legno viene sottoposto a trattamento termico per aumentarne la durabilità. Tali pratiche sono riscontrabili sia nella cultura costruttiva giapponese, dove le superfici lignee vengono intenzionalmente bruciate, sia nella tradizione alpina locale, nella quale i pali infissi nel terreno venivano fiammati nelle parti a contatto con il suolo per proteggerli dall’umidità e dalla marcescenza. Ispirandosi a questo sapere artigianale, la nuova stazione forestale si presenta simbolicamente come un volume infisso nel terreno e traduce un sapere costruttivo tramandato in chiave contemporanea.

SOSTENIBILITÀ COME RISORSA COSTRUTTIVA
Oltre alla costruzione in legno, l’edificio è realizzato secondo standard energetici elevati, raggiungendo la certificazione CasaClima Gold. L’approvvigionamento energetico avviene tramite pompe di calore, alimentate da un impianto fotovoltaico in copertura. Tutti i componenti edilizi e gli impianti tecnologici sono progettati secondo lo stato dell’arte, con particolare attenzione a efficienza energetica, durabilità e riduzione dei consumi.

L’ARCHITETTURA COME CONTRIBUTO
L’edificio rinuncia consapevolmente a gesti formali autoreferenziali, privilegiando una rigorosa elaborazione della funzione, del materiale e del dettaglio costruttivo. È proprio in questa sobrietà che risiede la sua qualità: l’architettura si configura come strumento funzionale e, al tempo stesso, come contributo concreto al dibattito contemporaneo sulla sostenibilità, sulla responsabilità e su un modo di costruire consapevole.
