VILLA BADIA BETWEEN PORTOFINO AND SANTA MARGHERITA LIGURE

Serena Mignatti leads the restyling of Villa Badia, with project coordination and site supervision by Marco Lecchi, transforming the residence into a place of emotional retreat overlooking the Gulf of Portofino. Spanning over 400 square meters, the property sits in one of the most evocative stretches of the Ligurian coast, where living becomes synonymous with calm, beauty, and well-being—a true place for the soul.

“The clients were looking to introduce a sense of poetry into a home that already had a strong identity, envisioning a space for family life, to be passed down through generations, but also a refuge from the pressures of the city. Among the home’s greatest assets are its generous scale and its views over the Mediterranean bays and surrounding hills,” explains the architect. “It was immediately clear that the key strengths were its location, the panorama, the garden, and the outdoor spaces. Every window frames a view—an ever-changing glimpse of Liguria stretching from Portofino to Rapallo.”

For this project, Mignatti selected a palette of soft, natural tones in continuity with the vivid colors of the Ligurian landscape. Each hue responds to its context, working in harmony with nature rather than competing with it, allowing the surrounding environment to remain the protagonist.

“Great care was taken in collaboration with the client to define every detail, making each corner unique—whether placing a lemon tree or bougainvillea in a precise location, or choosing lower vegetation to preserve specific views. Every space was conceived from the outside in. Indoors, one finds the tones of figs and lemons, as well as the colors of Portofino’s facades. I also wanted to bring the blue of the sea inside, while maintaining overall soft, understated interiors in a deliberately contrasting approach.”

The house is designed to be enjoyed year-round. In summer, dining and relaxation take place outdoors, while in winter they shift to the adjacent interior spaces.

In terms of interior design, the project favors a restrained approach, with essential furnishings that evoke a sense of timelessness and invite contemplation of the sea. “For the interiors,” adds Serena Mignatti, “I followed the clients’ eclectic taste, incorporating reclaimed objects and softening the concept of Wabi-Sabi. A significant travertine table designed by Emanuela Petrucci, discovered at the Salone del Mobile, was introduced. Existing elements were restored, including the dining table and the stone patio table, along with built-in cabinetry. Original travertine surfaces were preserved to recover the home’s authentic character. The staircase and handrail were retained, while floors were polished back to their original patina.

VILLA BADIA TRA PORTOFINO E SANTA MARGHERITA LIGURA

Serena Mignatti firma il progetto di restyling di Villa Badia, con il coordinamento e la direzione dei lavori a cura dell’architetto Marco Lecchi, che diventa un luogo di cura per il cuore con una incredibile vista sul Golfo di Portofino. La proprietà di oltre 400 metri quadrati si affaccia su uno degli angoli più magici del Mar Ligure, dove lo spazio dell’abitare è il quello della pace, della bellezza e dello stare bene, un luogo dell’anima.

“I clienti avevano bisogno di portare un tocco di poesia in una casa che aveva già un suo carattere, con l’idea di creare un luogo per la famiglia, da tramandare alle generazioni successive ma anche un rifugio dalle settimane e dallo stress della città. Tra le potenzialità di questa abitazione, la sua vasta estensione e la vista sulle baie del Mediterraneo e sulle colline” spiega l’architetto. “Ho capito subito che gli elementi di forza erano la posizione e il panorama, il giardino e gli spazi aperti. Ogni finestra, un quadro, uno scorcio della Liguria, che va da Portofino a Rapallo”.

Per questo progetto Mignatti ha scelto colori molto tenui e naturali, in continuità con quelli esterni, vivi e accesi, tipici del litorale ligure. Ogni tinta si appoggia al proprio contesto lavorando in tandem con i colori della natura evitando contrasti o sovrapposizioni, e lasciando sempre alla natura il ruolo principale”.

“C’è stata una grande attenzione a lavorare con il Cliente ai particolari nel rendere ogni angolo speciale, posizionare un albero di limoni o una buganvillea in un determinato punto, o scegliere una vegetazione più bassa per non coprire uno scorcio o una vista particolare. Ogni angolo è stato pensato dall’esterno verso l’interno. All’interno si trovano i toni dei fichi, dei limoni, ma anche i colori dei palazzi di Portofino. Ho voluto portare dentro anche il blu del mare. Lasciando gli ambienti con toni tenui con una operazione opposta”.

L’abitazione è godibile 365 giorni all’anno, d’estate e d’inverno. La sala da pranzo e l’ambiente di lettura e relax sono negli spazi esterni, in inverno sono negli spazi prospicienti.

Per quanto riguarda l’interior design, il progetto è stato pensato con pochi arredi, essenziali e dal sapore di un tempo, per godersi la casa e contemplare il mare. “Per l’arredamento - aggiunge Serena Mignatti - ho seguito il gusto eclettico dei clienti, usando gli oggetti di recupero e alleggerendo il concetto di Wabi Sabi. Ho inserito un importante tavolo in travertino, disegnato dall’architetto Emanuela Petrucci, visto alla scorsa edizione del Salone del Mobile. Recuperato, invece, il tavolo della sala da pranzo, così come il tavolo in pietra del patio che abbiamo fatto restaurare insieme alle armadiature a muro. Abbiamo mantenuto le preesistenze in travertino, per ridare il sapore di quello che doveva essere una volta. Abbiamo poi tenuto la scala, il corrimano, mentre i pavimenti sono stati lucidati e portati alla prima patina”.
