Slussporten | Wingårdhs
Stockholm / Sweden / 2026
Slussen is a historic node in central Stockholm where waterways, infrastructure and urban levels meet. The site has been repeatedly rebuilt, forming a layered structure of bridges, quays and connections.
In its current transformation, the masterplan by Foster + Partners repositions the area from a traffic system to a public landscape. A new bridge spans the junction, known locally as “Guldbron”. As part of the same strategy, two glass buildings are introduced beneath the bridge. Both volumes are designed by Wingårdhs for Nobis, which is both client and owner. One of these is realised as Slussporten.
The project is defined by a self-supporting glass enclosure placed beneath the bridge. The enclosure meets the underside of the structure without structural connection, forming a controlled gap that allows the two systems to move independently. The façade is composed of clear glass and oriented towards the public spaces of Slussen and the surrounding waterways, allowing visual continuity through the building and between interior spaces and the city and water beyond.
The restaurant is positioned at a low level in relation to the water, with with pedestrian, bicycle and boat traffic moving over and through Slussen.
The interior is organised into three main areas: the Gold Bar, the Food Bar and the Dining Room. The zones are defined by different seating types and spatial arrangements, ranging from bar seating and smaller groups to larger tables, more enclosed seating and a separate dining room.
Nearly all interior elements are custom-designed for the project; only the chairs are not. A wall clad in Italian glass mosaic runs through the restaurant, composed as a collage of enlarged onion motifs. Timber floorboards are laid in a large-scale herringbone pattern across the space.
The ceiling integrates lighting, sprinklers and acoustic treatment, with its tone calibrated in relation to the bridge above. The open kitchen is positioned as a backdrop within the space, with lighting directed towards the working area.
Mirrors are used throughout the interior as spatial elements and functional components, acting as dividers and storage.
From the interior, the view extends across Saltsjön between Södermalm and Gamla Stan, with the surrounding quays and movement through Slussen.
NARRATIVE
Slussporten - A room between two waters
For centuries, Slussen has been a site of crossings over water — a place where routes, levels and flows are continuously reworked. In its latest transformation, the masterplan by Foster + Partners shifts the site from a traffic system into a public landscape. A new bridge spans the junction, its yellow-toned steel structure — known locally as “Guldbron” — cutting a clear horizontal line between Södermalm and Gamla Stan.
In the same gesture, the masterplan introduced two glass volumes beneath the bridge. Both are designed by Wingårdhs for Nobis, which is both client and owner. Slussporten is one of these two buildings.
Slussporten sits directly beneath it, positioned close to the water and open towards Vattentorget. The project is defined by a self-supporting glass enclosure placed beneath the bridge — a precise construction that allows the building and the infrastructure above to remain independent. The glass façade meets the underside of the bridge without merging with it, forming a controlled gap between the two structures. This separation defines the interior.
The space is organised into three zones: the Gold Bar, the Food Bar and the Dining Room. The Gold Bar is centred around a continuous sofa that forms circular seating for both small and larger groups. The Food Bar is positioned in direct relation to the kitchen, with a communal table and surrounding mirrors and storage. The Dining Room offers a range of seating types, from smaller tables to larger arrangements, including circular sofas and booths and a separate dining room.
A wall clad in Italian glass mosaic runs through the restaurant, composed as a collage of enlarged onion motifs. The surface reflects light and reveals variation across the space. Timber floorboards laid in an oversized herringbone pattern form the base of the interior, their scale adjusting the perception of the room.
The ceiling integrates lighting, sprinklers and acoustic treatment. Its tone is calibrated in relation to the bridge above, so that from Vattentorget the underside of the bridge and the interior ceiling read in continuity.
The open kitchen forms a dark, glossy backdrop, focusing attention on the chefs and their work. The lighting is directed towards the working area. Mirrors are used throughout the interior as spatial elements and functional components, acting as dividers and storage while reflecting both the city and the activity within the room. Nearly all interior elements are custom-designed for the project; only the chairs are not. Materials, surfaces and furnishings are conceived as a unified interior.
From within the space, the city is read at close range — water, movement and the surrounding edges of Slussen passing just beyond the glass. The enclosure remains minimal, a thin layer between interior and exterior, allowing the restaurant to sit directly within the shifting conditions of the site.
“Everything is close-knit — a place to meet, gather, and linger. The proximity to the kitchen creates an immediate connection to the activity, while movement, reflections and people overlap throughout the space. Here, you sit as close to the outside as possible. The ambition is to create a Stockholm classic — durable, relevant and resilient, while unmistakably of its time.”
