MASTER PLAN

Situated next to Budapest’s Liget Park, one the Europe’s largest urban parks, the project reimagines an area comprising disused buildings – an office tower and a monastery dating from the early 20th century that was later converted into an elementary school – sited amid a landscape of ancient and majestic trees.

On the opposite side of the lot, Art Deco villas with their gardens and flowing decorations confer an elegant and richly layered residential character.

The masterplan translates this heritage into a new, mixed-use urban fabric where office and residential buildings are immersed in the city park. Conservation of the existing trees, considered as structural elements in the project, guided the placing of the new volumes and the definition of their proportions.

Office Building 1 was positioned on the footprint of the old tower, so minimizing the use of the land, while Office Building 2 arises from the carefully calculated extension of the former monastery/school, respecting its history and enriching it with a new architectural language.

This transformation has happened in the rapidly evolving cultural context of Liget Park, now enhanced by interventions of international repute such as the House of Music by Sou Fujimoto and the future New National Gallery by SANAA, and emerging as a new European museum complex. Dürer Park forms part of this scenario as an urban extension of the park, defining a contemporary frontage that brings together history, nature and architecture.

OFFICE BUILDING 1

Office Building 1 is conceived as a large horizontal volume organized around three equidistant vertical nuclei. The geometric matrix is intentionally clean and rational and becomes the initial reference for a more refined volumetric composition. The fully exposed floor slabs introduce a series of horizontal and vertical shifts that generate a controlled fragmentation of the building mass. This movement of the floors gives rise to a sequence of setbacks, projections and double-height volumes, modulating the perception of the buildings and conferring dynamic depth. The glazed surfaces open towards Liget Park, while the staggered compositions reduce the impact of the scale and generate an organic and almost natural visual rhythm.

The building is conceived as a transparent structure, designed to maximize views and to connect the interior spaces with the surrounding landscape. The building envelope is clad with a grid of vertical slats that regulate the light, moderating the sunlight and conferring an elegant and measured identity to the façade. The color palette – dark metals, glass in carefully calibrated hues and rich tones – expresses an elegance that is consonant with the aesthetic of Lissoni Casal Ribeiro that is characterized by precise proportions, essential geometries and materic harmony.

The result is a building that combines strength and lightness, a volume rooted to the ground but which dialogues with the sky, a new urban landmark along the l’Ajtósi Dürer sor that establishes a direct relation to the landscape of the Városliget.

OFFICE BUILDING 2

Office Building 2 originates from an early twentieth century monastery that was subsequently converted to an elementary school. An “L” section of the historic fabric was renovated and restored to its original clarity by virtue of a mineral finish that enhances the wall patterning and the institutional character. Alongside, a new contemporary wing defined by glazed surfaces and metal profiles was developed, introducing a calculated contrast between historical significance and architectural lightness.

The heart of the complex is an atrium of 700 square meters that establishes a direct relationship between the different histories of the two buildings. The renovated internal façade dialogues with the suspended levels of the new intervention, while natural light floods the space to create a luminous and open atmosphere. The former chapel has been renovated with careful attention to the historic context, restoring the brick arches, decorative fragments and period glazing, transforming it into an events space that seamlessly combines memory and contemporaneity.

The colors and materials of the extension were studied to delicately integrate with the historic structure. The surfaces, tones and construction details establish a visual continuity that preserves the original character of the building without forgoing a precise and contemporary architectural presence. The ensemble establishes a coherent entity, capable of valorizing the history of the site while at the same time becoming part of the new urban identity of Dürer Park.

MASTER PLAN

Accanto al Liget Park a Budapest, uno dei più grandi parchi urbani d’Europa, il progetto reinterpreta un’area con la presenza di alcuni edifici dismessi – una torre per uffici e un monastero dei primi del Novecento poi trasformato in scuola elementare – già in origine immersi in un paesaggio di alberi monumentali.

Sul lato opposto del lotto, la presenza delle ville Art Nouveau con i loro giardini e le decorazioni fluide, conferisce al contesto un carattere residenziale elegante e stratificato.

Il master plan traduce questa ricchezza in un nuovo organismo urbano misto in cui edifici direzionali e residenze sono immersi nel parco pubblico. La conservazione degli alberi esistenti, considerati elementi strutturali del progetto, ha guidato la collocazione dei nuovi volumi e la definizione delle loro proporzioni.

L’Office Building 1 è stato posizionato sull’impronta della torre precedente, minimizzando il consumo di suolo; l’Office Building 2 nasce invece dall’ampliamento calibrato dell’ex monastero/scuola, rispettandone la memoria storica e arricchendola con un nuovo linguaggio architettonico.

Questa trasformazione avviene in un contesto culturale in forte evoluzione: Liget Park, oggi valorizzato da interventi di respiro internazionale come la House of Music di Sou Fujimoto e la futura New National Gallery di SANAA, si configura come un nuovo polo museale europeo. Dürer Park si inserisce in questo scenario come un’estensione urbana del parco, definendo un fronte contemporaneo che intreccia storia, natura e architettura. 

OFFICE BUILDING 1

L’Office Building 1 si sviluppa come un grande volume orizzontale articolato attorno a tre nuclei verticali equidistanti. La matrice geometrica, volutamente pulita e razionale, diventa il punto di partenza per una modellazione volumetrica più raffinata. Le solette, pienamente leggibili, introducono una serie di slittamenti orizzontali e verticali che generano una scomposizione controllata della massa edilizia.
Questo movimento dei piani dà vita ad una sequenza di arretramenti, avanzamenti e doppi volumi in facciata, modulando la percezione dell’edificio e restituendogli una profondità dinamica. Le superfici vetrate si aprono verso Liget Park, mentre il gioco di sfalsamenti riduce l’impatto della scala e costruisce un ritmo visivo organico, quasi naturale.

L’edificio è concepito come una struttura trasparente, pensata per massimizzare le viste e per connettere l’ambiente interno al paesaggio circostante. L’involucro è rivestito da una trama di lamelle verticali che regola la luce, riduce l’irraggiamento e conferisce al prospetto un’identità elegante e misurata. La palette cromatica – metalli scuri, vetri dalle sfumature controllate, tonalità profonde – esprime una raffinatezza coerente con l’estetica di Lissoni Casal Ribeiro caratterizzata da proporzioni precise, geometrie essenziali e armonia materica.

Ne risulta un edificio che combina forza e leggerezza, un volume radicato alla terra ma che dialoga con il cielo, un nuovo landmark urbano lungo l’Ajtósi Dürer sor capace di instaurare un rapporto diretto con il paesaggio del Városliget.

OFFICE BUILDING 2

L’Office Building 2 trae origine dall’ex monastero dei primi del Novecento, successivamente adattato a scuola elementare. Una porzione a “L” del corpo storico è stata restaurata e riportata alla sua luminosità originaria grazie a una finitura minerale che ne valorizza la tessitura muraria e il carattere istituzionale. Accanto a essa si sviluppa una nuova ala contemporanea, definita da superfici vetrate e profili metallici, che introduce un contrasto calibrato tra peso storico e leggerezza architettonica.

Il cuore del complesso è un atrio di 700 metri quadrati che mette in relazione diretta le due epoche costruttive. La facciata interna restaurata si confronta con i livelli sospesi del nuovo intervento, mentre la luce naturale attraversa lo spazio realizzando un’atmosfera luminosa e aperta. L’ex cappella, restaurata con attenzione filologica, recupera archi in mattoni, frammenti decorativi e vetrate storiche, trasformandosi in una sala eventi che unisce memoria e contemporaneità in modo naturale.

Il trattamento cromatico e materico dell’ampliamento è studiato per integrarsi con delicatezza accanto alla struttura storica. Le superfici, le tonalità e i dettagli costruttivi definiscono una continuità visiva che preserva il carattere dell’edificio originario senza rinunciare a una presenza architettonica precisa e attuale. L’insieme restituisce un organismo coerente, capace di valorizzare la storia del sito e allo stesso tempo di inserirsi nella nuova identità urbana di Dürer Park.
