Haniyasu House | AATISMO
Kanagawa / Japan / 2025
Named after the Japanese deity of clay, Haniyasu House is a combined residence and studio for two generations: architects and their parents, who are ceramicists.
The project involved stripping a 1967 wooden house to its structural frame and inserting four truncated pyramidal volumes composed of site-excavated soil, fired ceramic clay, and oxidizing metal powders. By scaling up the material transformation processes of ceramics to an architectural level, the design creates a space reminiscent of a "primitive settlement," connecting Kamakura’s geological time with contemporary creative practice through the physical accumulation of material strata.

"Designed not to peak at completion, the architecture adapts to the terrain and its inhabitants over time, deepening its overall presence. Transcending a mere structure, it achieves a complex character that is both crafted and natural, generating an endless dialogue between the topography, local history, and the creative practices of its residents."
