Vineyard House | Henecka Architekten BDA

Embedded in the hilly landscape of the Kraichgau, this residential house just outside Bruchsal develops directly from the topography. The compact volume is deeply embedded in the slope and deliberately recedes from view. What remains visible are primarily the massive retaining walls, which anchor the building within the terrain while also providing privacy from the neighbouring winery.

Inside, the house opens up around a central patio, creating light, openness, and a sheltered heart. The solid construction, integrated into the slope, minimizes the impact on the landscape and uses thermal mass to create a balanced indoor climate. A green roof and compact form reduce sealed surfaces and improve summer heat protection.

Each room has its own connection to the outside, with a distinct atmosphere: the bedrooms and children’s rooms are oriented towards the quiet inner courtyard, the living room opens onto a sheltered garden space, while the dining room frames views across the vineyards towards the Palatinate hills. This creates a carefully composed dialogue between architecture and landscape.

Inside, lime plaster, exposed screed, and custom-made walnut built-ins define the atmosphere. The restrained material palette creates calm, timeless spaces..

The project has received several awards, including recognition in the “Exemplary Building” programme by the Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Architects and the BIG SEE Award, and was selected as one of the 50 best single-family houses by Callwey Verlag.
