A Sculptural Landmark in the Kraichgau Landscape Zeutern / Germany / 2016

The house is situated on a hilltop at the edge of the wine-growing village of Zeutern and opens up to expansive views of the gentle rolling landscape of the Kraichgau.

Its sculptural form emerges from the topography while also acting as a landmark.

The grounded character of the building is reflected in the materiality of its sculptural envelope: timber windows, folding shutters, and oak façade cladding are combined with copper coverings and a rough, coarse-grained render.

Particular attention is given to the continuity between exterior and interior space. Terraced courtyards form a built landscape that continues spatially and atmospherically inside. This creates a dynamic dialogue between architecture and its surroundings.

The landscape design, with native wildflowers and hedgerow plants, creates a seamless transition to the adjacent field edge while also providing habitat for insects and small animals.
