EcoSchool Jardim | Vertentes Arquitetura

EcoSchool Jardim emerged from a shared aspiration between the client and the architects: to create an early childhood school that would not resemble a conventional educational building. From the outset, the vision was to design an environment capable of reflecting a pedagogical approach centered on autonomy, exploration, and everyday contact with nature. Vertentes Arquitetura was challenged to translate these principles into architecture, moving away from the traditional model of enclosed buildings, long corridors, and classrooms disconnected from the outdoors.

Built on a narrow, irregular L-shaped site, the school is organized as a single linear pavilion. This strategy concentrates the built program while preserving generous open areas around the building, allowing the gardens to become an integral part of daily school life. Rather than filling the site with scattered volumes, the design celebrates open space, permeability, and the continuous presence of the landscape.

The main entrance is positioned at the point where the building gently bends. This subtle inflection responds to the site's geometry while helping to shape the outdoor spaces, creating fluid circulation and strengthening the relationship between architecture and the surrounding gardens. Throughout the entire building, every learning environment maintains a direct visual connection with the landscape.

The internal layout prioritizes simplicity and efficiency. Classrooms occupy the most privileged portion of the site, all facing the gardens. Service and support spaces are grouped at one end of the building, while the dining hall is located at the opposite end, creating clear circulation patterns and minimizing unnecessary corridors.

Construction decisions followed the same principles of rationality and durability. The school was built using exposed structural concrete block masonry, polished concrete floors, and insulated metal roofing panels. The choice of robust materials and straightforward construction systems balanced spatial quality with careful budget control. Inside, the ceilings follow the roof's slope, enhancing the sense of openness while maximizing the penetration of natural light.

Along the building's inner façade, a continuous sinuous screen made of ecological wood runs the full length of the pavilion. Beyond providing protection from direct sunlight and rain along the external circulation, the element gives the building a strong architectural identity while serving as a support structure for climbing plants incorporated into the landscape design. As the vegetation matures, the façade gradually acquires new layers of shade, texture, and seasonal character.

The relationship with the garden guided many of the project's design decisions. Large glazed openings connect the classrooms directly to the outdoor spaces, allowing educational activities to extend beyond the physical limits of the building. Trees, planting beds, changing weather conditions, and natural cycles become part of the children's everyday experience, enriching opportunities for observation, exploration, and learning.

Rather than treating nature as a backdrop, the project embraces it as an essential component of the educational environment, where architecture becomes a framework for curiosity, discovery, and the development of a lasting connection between children and the natural world.
