Rear house and painter's studio | DP6 architectuurstudio

In the heart of Delft's city centre, DP6 transformed a historic rear house and designed a new painter's studio in the garden for a creative couple. 

The house has its entrance and garage on the canal, but is otherwise mainly oriented towards the garden side; a green oasis in the city centre. The same applies to the new studio, which was designed at the back of the lush garden. The façades of the two volumes, situated opposite one another, are fully transparent and can be opened up completely, allowing indoors and outdoors to flow into each other. From the front door on the canal, a clear sightline runs all the way to the studio. 

Inside the house, new, warm elements have been crafted in oak: the openwork staircase, the kitchen, the wardrobe, the fireplace unit. The wood brings warmth and calm to the existing structure, and is alternated with celadon-coloured surfaces that playfully add depth to the spaces.

The studio, built in Douglas fir timber, spans the full width of the plot. A semi-open wooden canopy towards the garden offers a sheltered seating area against the façade and tempers the daylight entering inside. A skylight strip running the entire width of the studio captures the northern light.
