The close relationship between the house and the surrounding landscape was a central consideration throughout the design process. The interior spaces open onto the garden from slightly different perspectives, with different orientations and window types, while the garden responds just as diversely to the needs of its inhabitants. It is rare to have the opportunity to develop the design of a house alongside the design of its garden, and even rarer for a jointly conceived landscape concept to be fully realised. Here, we were delighted to achieve just that: the garden is not simply an obligatory extension of the family home, adding extra work and perhaps a small sandbox at the far end, but a natural space that complements the functions of the house and provides room for play, relaxation and time spent together.

The quiet street and the mature trees on the surrounding plots provided a strong foundation for the garden’s varied character. On the street-facing side, the colourful and lively “sun garden”, almost constantly bathed in sunlight, is in bloom from February through October. The quieter, more shaded woodland garden at the rear has a much more tranquil character, defined by different shades of green and more subdued colours. The garden also offers several exciting places for children to play. Every element of the sandbox is made from natural, living materials, while the treehouse in the rear garden is the kind of “hideaway” every child dreams of. Like something from a fairy tale, the wooden house rises above the garden among the canopies of the neighbouring trees.

We believe that a good house should respond to its surroundings and reflect the personality of the people who live in it. This is what makes it unique and lovable, in harmony with both its environment and its inhabitants. This principle also guided the design of this house, which, at the clients’ request, accommodates both quiet, intimate family moments and lively gatherings with larger groups of guests. Their desire for a close relationship with nature is equally evident, as is their strong attachment to books.
