Designed by Fernando Luiz Dal Bosco, this 600-square-metre apartment was created for a businessman in the healthcare sector who also invests in real estate and agricultural properties. The apartment had never been occupied and was delivered without any finishes, offering complete freedom to develop the project from the ground up. Located in Curitiba, Paraná, in southern Brazil, the residence was conceived to reflect the client’s lifestyle, values and appreciation for timeless design.

Fernando’s previous projects for the same client played an important role in shaping the new residence. Already familiar with his habits, expectations and way of living, the designer had a clear understanding of the values behind his choices, including quality, functionality, personality and timelessness. This long-standing relationship made the process naturally more fluid, with open dialogue and the freedom to develop the project in line with the studio’s vision.

The apartment’s original configuration was essentially an open floor plan, allowing the layout to be completely rethought and adapted to the residents’ needs. One of the main transformations involved the connection between the interior and the terrace. Given Curitiba’s cooler climate for much of the year, the clients wanted to expand the living areas, creating more generous and comfortable spaces for gathering.

Part of the terrace was incorporated into the living area, enlarging the social spaces and strengthening the connection between the rooms. The remaining outdoor area, in turn, took on a new role within the project. Rather than maintaining a conventional terrace, the space was transformed into a large garden with a reflecting pool and lush vegetation. The intervention brought the interior and exterior closer together, while the garden became a visual extension of the living areas, introducing nature, depth and a more welcoming atmosphere into the apartment.

Large wooden muxarabi screens are another defining feature of the project. Composed of pivoting panels, they allow the relationship between the spaces to be continuously reconfigured. They can conceal certain areas and create more private moments or remain open to encourage integration and bring dynamism to the layout. Beyond their practical function, the screens have a strong architectural presence, adding texture, warmth and a natural connection with the other materials used throughout the project.

The lighting was carefully planned to highlight the artworks and architectural details. Rather than an abundance of light, the scheme favours a clean, elegant and intimate atmosphere. A combination of indirect lighting and carefully positioned accent lighting creates different layers throughout the interiors, bringing warmth while allowing the architecture and artworks to take centre stage.

The home automation system was also completely redesigned to meet the residents’ needs. Technology was discreetly integrated into the architecture, providing convenience and autonomy without interfering with the aesthetic language of the interiors.

Custom-designed furniture, alongside iconic pieces of Brazilian design, plays a fundamental role in defining the identity of the project, creating a dialogue between major names in Brazilian design and contemporary architecture. Pieces include a pair of Mole armchairs by Sérgio Rodrigues, a sofa by Guilherme Wentz and armchairs by Jader Almeida, which bring lightness and elegance to the living room. Oscar Niemeyer’s iconic Rio Chaise also occupies a prominent position. Sculptural and historically significant, the piece reflects the importance of Brazilian design and takes on a presence akin to that of a work of art within the composition.
