Snøhetta, in collaboration with Beijing Institute of Architectural Design (BIAD), has won the international competition to design the Beijing Art Museum in Tongzhou District, Beijing.

The project marks Snøhetta’s second major cultural institution in the Chinese capital, following the acclaimed Beijing City Library, which opened in 2023.

Envisioned as a cornerstone for the city’s expanding cultural landscape, the museum will serve not only as a venue for art, but as a civic gathering space and a catalyst for new urban development in Tongzhou.

Vision as Architectural Concept
At the heart of the proposal lies the concept of “vision”—an idea that defines the museum’s dual role: to collect and gather, and to exhibit and reveal.

Rather than acting solely as a repository of culture, the Beijing Art Museum is conceived as a spatial instrument for seeing, where the act of observation itself becomes an aesthetic experience.

This notion of vision establishes a multidimensional dialogue, connecting artists and audiences, history and future, architecture and landscape, individuals and communities. The museum becomes a living nexus where multiple perspectives coexist, overlap, and evolve.

A Sculptural Form Above the City
Spanning more than 110,000 square metres, the museum will host a wide spectrum of artistic expressions, from fine arts and intangible cultural heritage to fashion design and contemporary art.

Positioned above a metro line, the building also functions as a transportation hub, transforming arrival into an integral part of the cultural experience.

The sculptural massing radiates outward from a central core, while lens-like, rippled façades soften the building’s edges and dissolve the boundary between architecture and landscape. This permeability generates an active public realm, inviting the city into the museum and the museum into the city.

An Atrium of Light, Movement, and Exchange
At the centre of the building lies a kaleidoscopic atrium, conceived as the museum’s gravitational heart.

This circular space draws visitors inward, creating vertical continuity across multiple levels through semi-open exhibition pockets and social spaces.

Galleries, storage areas, and support functions spiral around the atrium, extending into petal-like volumes that frame panoramic views of the surrounding urban context. Visitors experience a continuous dialogue between looking out and being seen—between interior reflection and external connection.

Landscape as Cultural Continuum
The landscape design unfolds as an organic extension of the architecture, echoing the building’s radiating geometry.

Generous outdoor civic spaces invite sculptures, public interaction, and open-air cultural activities, reinforcing the museum’s role as a place of encounter and dialogue.

Rather than acting as a backdrop, the landscape becomes a spatial continuum where architecture, interior, and exterior merge into a unified cultural field.

Sustainability Embedded in Design
Sustainability is integrated into the project’s core strategy.
Photovoltaic panels on the roof contribute to on-site energy generation, while the landscape incorporates water-management systems aligned with sponge city principles, enhancing ecological resilience and environmental performance.

Through this balance of architectural ambition and ecological awareness, the Beijing Art Museum positions itself as a forward-looking cultural institution for the city.

Looking Ahead

The Beijing Art Museum broke ground on 31 December 2025 and is scheduled to open in 2029.

Once completed, it will stand as a new cultural landmark—a place where visions intersect, where art is experienced as movement, space, and perspective, and where architecture becomes a lens through which the city sees itself anew.
