Klas Hyllén creates refined contemporary architecture with exquisite detailing. His award-winning practice explores the relationship between context, materials, place, and the environment. Often projects are set within challenging contexts, whether an existing townscape, or natural landscape. Environmental sustainability runs throughout all work, whether new-build, heritage, or retrofit. Klas Hyllén’s values and approach drive positive collaborations, together with his clients, that make beautiful, enduring homes.
Klas Hyllén grew up on the coast of southern Sweden in a family of makers, artists, and thinkers. His innate sense of Scandinavian simplicity is balanced, with a profound respect for, and connection to, nature. How architecture and buildings relate to place and environment has been a constant fascination.
Klas Hyllén studied architecture at Edinburgh College of Art: a keen mountaineer, he was drawn in part by Scotland’s rugged landscape. His first-class honours Architecture degree and Diploma in Architecture (Distinction) was swiftly followed by a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) on design in Architecture titled, ‘The Unconscious Life of Old Town’ that explores contemporary architecture within a historical context. An early career within Scottish architecture practices followed.
In 2013 Klas Hyllén established his eponymous practice and is now based in Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire. He also set up Studio Bacchus, the co-working and office space from where he runs his practice. Klas Hyllén has a young family and creates a balanced lifestyle together with his wife Ruth. He remains a keen mountaineer.
