Steyn Studio's recently completed beach holiday home, Casa del Sol, gracefully blends contemporary design with the timeless elegance of Andalusian and Moorish architecture, offering a unique interpretation of coastal living on the Costa de la Luz, Spain. The house takes its name from the symbolic sun motif, seen in its distinctive inverted arches, which are carefully oriented towards the east and west to evoke the movements of the rising and setting sun. This thoughtful gesture connects the architecture with the natural rhythm of the environment, further reinforcing the house's relationship to the landscape.

Inspired by the region’s traditional cortijo—the Spanish courtyard house—Casa del Sol organizes its spaces around a series of intimate courtyards. The design features a striking two-story central volume, more ornate in nature, which divides the inner courtyard into two distinct areas. This central volume is not only a visual focal point but also a functional element that defines the flow of space within the home.

The central courtyard, where the heart of the design comes alive, is surrounded by a series of stone arcades that blur the line between indoor and outdoor spaces. These arcades wrap around a central lap pool, inviting residents to experience the tranquil beauty of the courtyard from multiple perspectives. At the opposite end, a stone pergola mirrors the arcade, providing a shaded retreat and further enhancing the sense of connection between the built environment and the natural surroundings. All rooms on the ground floor open directly onto the courtyard, allowing the interior spaces to flow seamlessly into the exterior, creating a sense of openness and light.

Unlike typical homes in the area, which are often cantered on expansive lawns, Casa del Sol takes a bold urban stance. The house extends to three edges of the plot, establishing a strong perimeter and creating a private, enclosed courtyard at the centre. The design strategically maximizes the available space, offering both privacy and a sense of retreat while still engaging with the surrounding landscape.

Entry to the plot is from the street corner, with a subtle gesture of openness—a small corner of the house is set back, offering a welcoming invitation to visitors. The entrance courtyard, inspired by the elegant patio Sevillano, acts as a transitional space, leading guests into the heart of the home.

The choice of materials for the project reflects the rich local tradition of Andalusia, with finishes of limestone plaster, local stone, and traditional clay tiles. The interior floors are also finished with limestone, adding texture and warmth that complements the natural surroundings. These materials, combined with the striking architectural forms, create a timeless home that is both modern and deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of the region.

Casa del Sol is a celebration of light, space, and craftsmanship, creating a harmonious connection between the built environment and the natural world while offering a serene, sun-filled sanctuary on the Costa de la Luz.
