Villa Riberolle | RREEL

Villa Riberolle is a private street located in the 20th arrondissement at the edge of Père Lachaise Cemetery. Since its creation in the mid-19th century, the buildings on this street have housed small industries and workshops: trimmings, cabinetmaking, jewelry, film manufacturing, and even public baths. For over a century, these buildings have been modified according to their use and the work carried out there. However, their original features remain: each building consists of a large metal-framed hall covered with sheet metal, hidden behind a pediment façade. It is these archetypal figures that give the street its identity and lend it an urban dimension.

The project concerns two of these halls, which a film post-production company wishes to renovate to install editing rooms and a screening room. The programme is not set in stone, and as the company's needs are constantly evolving, it may change over the coming years. The aim of the project is therefore to consolidate the existing structure so that it can accommodate various scenarios of use. Our proposal seeks to create a space that accommodates both permanence and change.

In order to move forward with the uncertainty of the programme, the work is organised in several phases:

- The structural work project aims to restore the basic qualities necessary for the building to function properly. The original envelope and structure are being preserved, which involves stabilising and reinforcing the structure. A large concrete staircase is being created, in keeping with the building's purpose. Finally, a curved wall made of concrete blocks conceals the necessary service areas for whatever activity is hosted there: toilets, technical room, office. 

- In a second phase, the light and reversible finishing work project will fit out the editing rooms. Both partitions and exposed networks are easily modifiable. On the ground floor, the large
screening room  disappears behind a mirror, a spatial paradox that duplicates the space and thus preserves the initial volume, while dividing it.

The renovated building is thus deeply rooted in the tradition of industrial buildings: activities evolve within a structure that remains unchanged. The architectural project is conceived as the organisation of these stable and changing elements in space and time.

La villa Riberolle est une impasse privée située dans le 20e arrondissement au pied du Cimetière du Père Lachaise. Depuis sa création au milieu du XIXe siècle, les bâtiments de cette rue accueillent de petites industries et des ateliers : passementerie, ébénisterie, bijouterie, fabrication de pellicule, mais aussi bains-douches… Pendant plus d’un siècle, ces bâtiments ont été modifiés en fonction des activités qu’ils ont accueillies. Mais leurs caractéristiques originales persistent : chaque bâtiment est composé d’une grande halle en structure métallique couverte de tôle, dissimulée derrière une façade à fronton. Ce sont ces figures archétypales qui donnent une identité à l’impasse et lui confère une dimension urbaine.

Le projet concerne deux de ces halles, qu’une société de post-production de cinéma souhaite réhabiliter pour y installer des salles de montage et une salle de projection. Le programme n’est pas figé, et les besoins de cette société étant en constante évolution, il peut être amené à évoluer à l’avenir. L’objectif du projet est donc de consolider l’existant pour lui permettre d’accueillir différents scénarios d’occupation. Notre proposition cherche à mettre en espace les permanences et les changements.

Pour agir avec cette incertitude du programme, les travaux sont organisés en plusieurs tranches:

- le projet de gros-oeuvre vise à redonner au lieu les qualités de base pour son bon fonctionnement. L’enveloppe et la structure d’origine sont conservées, ce qui implique un confortement et un renforcement de la structure. Un grand escalier en béton est créé, à la mesure de la vocation du bâtiment. Enfin un mur courbe en blocs d’agglomérés permet de dissimuler les locaux servants nécessaires quelle que soit l’activité accueillie : sanitaires, local technique, bureau.

- dans un second temps, le projet de second oeuvre, léger et réversible, permet d’aménager les salles de montage. Les cloisonnements comme les réseaux apparents sont facilement modifiables. Au rez-de-chaussée, la grande sall e de projection disparait derrière un miroir, paradoxe spatial qui duplique l’espace et fait ainsi perdurer le volume initial, tout en le divisant.

Le bâtiment rénové s’ancre ainsi dans la tradition du bâtiment industriel : des activités qui évoluent au sein d’une figure qui demeure. Le projet architectural est imaginé comme l’organisation dans l’espace et dans le temps, de ces éléments stables et changeants.
